About

The Full Story

My name is Anu Redway

Nigerian born, Cleveland raised.

My slogan or motto for my business is "Using artistic parables to showcase and communicate love; value; and the human experience."

My life motto is seek to understand before seeking to be understood. I mention these things first because it is what drives me and is very relevant to my work because my life is my work. I think life is way too short these days to live for the dollar.

I have been a working artist and creative director for about 9 years

My primary mediums are painting, Sculpture, and photography. When people ask which one I like best, my reply is always, "it depends on the day".

Having been brought up by a career artist for a father and a cook/event planner/child care provider/interior decorator for a mother, you could say creativity flows through my veins. Funny thing is they did not actually teach me anything directly. I just picked up on a lot of stuff. Every time I would ask my dad as a kid, he would always want me to find my own creative path.

"Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of none". Not too many people know the full quote. I am passionate about self expression and I never want to put myself in a box. I've done what seems like a little bit of almost everything and I don't regret a single thing I have done thus far.

I attended Kent State as a fashion design major and Cleveland State as a Studio Art Major with a concentration in Sculpture and Photography. I started off doing shows of my paintings at various universities in the north east Ohio region, and later expanded to fine art/fashion photography, ceramic, metal sculpture and epoxy art.

MercyWerks is more than just a brand name. It's my story. Mercy is my name, Anu, translated in english. So it implies my work as well as the fact that God's mercy has done so much for me. In the Bible, whenever Jesus wanted to teach a principle, or make a point, he usually told a story, or asked people questions. This is the derivative of my mission statement.

Studies have shown over and over again that communicating "information" as is, is not very effective. Stories "trigger the release of this neurochemical called oxytocin, which is known in some circles as the love drug." How many times have you continued to watch a bad movie or tv series in the name of, "I just want to know how it ends". That's just one example of the power of storytelling.

The Empathy Museum’s Clare Patey says, ‘Stories have a transformative power to allow us to see the world in a different way than we do if we just encounter it on our own. Stories are an entry point to understanding a different experience of the world.’

I have a hard time creating if I do not feel as though my work has a meaning and/or purpose. In the state our world is in today, I make it my life's mission to provide avenues where we hear more perspectives that will hopefully bring more connection in our world today. The minute we take the time to hear and and try to understand others viewpoints, as well as build our own self awareness, the more unity and empathy the world will have. It can be so easy to teach and see outside of ourselves, and so difficult to learn if we don't open ourselves up.

I create original works for sale, commissioned pieces, as well as teach both children and adults. I meet people where they are at, and walk alongside them to where they want to go.

My art is evolving every single day as any good artist's work would. I am evolving everyday and I am here for the journey, after all, the journey itself is the destination as they say.

If you seek to follow my journey, keep up.
