What a disgusting phrase right?
 
The phrase "pretty for a black girl" is extremely offensive, and unfortunately, I have heard it directed at me several times in my life. Many other darker-skinned black women have shared similar experiences.
 
I have even been told, "I normally don't date black girls, but you're not like that black." My immediate reaction was confusion because I am from Africa and have never understood what it means to not be "that black."
 
I want to bring attention to this issue because despite progress, many people still hold on to these poisonous notions. Dark-skinned women, in particular, are often made to doubt their beauty because of years of white supremacy.
 
In this painting, a beautiful dark-skinned woman is depicted surrounded by discriminatory phrases commonly directed at black women. I collected these phrases from my own experiences and those of other black women. Can you recognize any familiar ones? Have you ever said any of these phrases yourself?
