Story: 
 
The inspiration for this painting, as well as the painting "Queen," came from observing a young African woman bleach her skin and then belittle other dark-skinned women based on their appearance. It was disheartening to witness her newfound sense of superiority and beauty simply because her skin was lighter. Her original skin tone was stunning, but she failed to see her own inherent beauty.
 
After learning about other people's experiences with skin lightening, I wanted to create a reminder that there is freedom and beauty in being true to oneself. "Freedom" is a celebration of African and African-American women, while "Queen" is a tribute to all women with dark skin from around the world. As the saying goes, "the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice." Let us embrace and celebrate our natural beauty.
